Been taking Zithromax for 48 hours now and I still have a fever. Help?
I see that you’re a pretty knowledgeable nurse on yahoo answers so I was looking to get some advice. I’ve had a sore throat all week so I finally went in to see the doctor on friday.I was put on zithromax 250×6(z-pack) and I started it on friday night and I just took the dose for day 2 about 10 hours ago and I’m still experiencing a fever between 100 and 101. That’s the same temperatures that I was at before starting the medication. Should I wait it out more or should I assume that the zithromax isn’t getting the job done? By the way, my rapid strep test came back negative so they labeled it as a regular infection of the tonsils with a huge white pussing spot.
you suggested taking fioricet but isn’t that only for migraines?

Zithromax capsules and suspension contain the active ingredient azithromycin which is used to treat infections caused by bacteria.
Your infection is probably a viral one (negative strep), antibiotics are useless against viruses.
With bacterial infections they usually start to show effects within 24 – 48 hour.

Zithromax is for treating infections not pain. You still need to take something for the fever like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Make sure you take the full course of Zithromax.

??? Who are you talking to, Chris?

Did you have a viral culture done as well? You know that Z-max won’t help if this is viral. Continue attacking your fever, if it makes you feel uncomfortable, but use ibuprofen instead of Tylenol. Other cooling measures include 15 minute tepid baths and lots of cold fluids.

Fioricet is a combination of butalbital, acetaminophen and caffeine. It was formulated for tension headaches and its unlabeled use is for migraine headaches. I don’t consider this an appropriate choice for tonsillitis. For what did this “pretty knowledegable nurse” suggest it be used?

Contact your doctor about this but continue the Z-max until advised to discontinue.

Doctors use a variety of antibiotics in order to treat the strep throat and to make it go away for good. The most common antibiotic used for strep throat in the past was penicillin. Then some strep infections became resistant to penicillin and doctors have used it less and less over the course of time. Antibiotic resistance is common in strep throat infections so doctors keep having to change antibiotics to something the strep throat bacteria aren’t as resistant to.
Other choices for doctor’s antibiotics for strep throat include erythromycin-based antibiotics. This can include erythromycin itself or Zithromax (azythromycin). Zithromax is a good choice because it only has to be taken for 5-6 days and it lasts for a long time in the body. Other antibiotics require a ten day course of antibiotics.
