How much does paxil increase your chance of having a child with birth defects?
Hello,
I just started on paxil not long ago due to lots of anxiety and having panic attacks. Ever since I started I am so scared I may accidentally get pregnant and my baby could be at risk and I wouldn’t know it until I miss my period. Me and my husband aren’t trying for kids, but we’re not exactly careful. I just wanted to know that if I were to get pregnant, would taking paxil before I missed my period (and find out I was pregnant) cause the baby to have a birth defect?!?!

I read once at paxilprogress.org that the effect would be the earliest stages in pregnancy. Some people have such bad withdrawals from Paxil that they unwisely decide to stay on it while pregnant with the thought that the harm is already done, if there was any. I personally recommend getting off Paxil if you haven’t been on it long. It has horrifying and very long lasting withdrawal symptoms. There are other anti-depressants outside of SSRIs that aren’t as bad. There are also good natural remedies… Valerian Herb for anxiety… St. John’s Wort for depression. Homeopathy is very effective and safe, such as Stramonium and Gelsemium. Cognitive Behavior Therepy (CBT) is also effective. I’ve read many good reports about that in forums for anxiety.

According to recent studies it has been shown that women who are Paxil are 6 times more likely to have a birth defect caused by Paxil, than those who are not taking the drug. Women who are in their first trimester of pregnancy are most at risk.
