How long after taking naproxen 500 mg can i breastfeed?
I’m nearly a month post partum but still trying to heal from a second degree tear. I was in serious pain today but unfortunately I ran out of vicodine. So in desperation, I turned to the medicine I used for my back problems. I took the meds 6 hours ago. Should I wait longer? Is my milk already tainted?

Naproxen has a long half-life and will appear in breast milk for quite some time. The dose to the baby is typically less than 3% (adjusted for weight) than it is to the mother. So it shouldn’t be any worse for the baby than Vicodin (which is also secreted in small amounts in breast milk). Ideally you shouldn’t be taking anything at all, or you should avoid breastfeeding, but ignoring pain is not easy, and there are many benefits to breastfeeding.

You might simply ask your doctor for advice on what medication to use. He or she may also be able to give you a new prescription for whichever pain reliever works best and carries the least risk for the baby.
